• High school graduate with strong knowledge in astronomy/space science with bachelor’s degree
preferred.
• Willing to learn planetarium computer systems.
• Teaching experience highly desired.
• Outgoing, friendly, confident personality. Able to interact with a wide variety of people in a
tactful and courteous manner.
• Able to effectively communicate loudly and clearly to large groups.
• Able to make sound judgements and maintain a calm demeanor in a dynamic, fast-paced work
environment.
Duties and Responsibilities
• Be a positive enthusiastic representative of the Virginia Living Museum
• Operate the planetarium’s digital SciDome system.
• Operate the planetarium’s SkyLase system.
• Present live sky programs in the planetarium theater.
• Interpret night sky phenomena during planetarium programs and outside the planetarium using a variety of telescopes.
• Assist with execution of classroom programming, observatory and overnight events as directed.
• Engage and oversee volunteers in completion of duties.
• Other duties as assigned
Essential Job Requirements
• Must be able to work Saturdays and Sundays.
• Must be able to hear and speak clearly
• Physical requirements include medium work, must be able to lift up to 40lbs. comfortably
• Must be able to stand for extended periods of time and move about on foot to accomplish tasks
• Must be able to stoop, kneel, crouch, crawl, reach, push, pull, lift, grasp, feel, and utilize repetitive motions
• This position is subject to environmental condition for activities occurring indoors and outdoors.
