What you’ll do:

Help animals in need! Our team of highly skilled veterinarians, with support from certified technicians and assistants, provide essential services to the pets and rescue animals that need us the most. CM’s team of medical professionals sees over 100,000 cats and dogs every year—and there are many more that need our help. No worrying about the cost of services to your clients – the ASPCA provides services to qualifying clients at low or no cost to them. The ASPCA’s CM program offers high-quality, high-volume spay/neuter (HQHVSN), preventive care and treatment for minor illnesses and injuries. Experienced HQHVSN surgeons may choose either surgery days or Primary Pet Care (PPC) appointment days at our Community Veterinary Clinic. Have small animal experience but not HQHVSN? We have PPC shifts available too.

Schedule:
• This is a temporary, contingent position and the person hired will be employed through a third-party staffing agency. Relief/fill-in is available Monday through Friday, 8:00AM – 4:00PM (HQHVSN) or 9:00AM – 5:00PM (PPC).

Responsibilities:

Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

Medical (70%)
• Provide compassionate, quality preventive and basic care to patients in underserved areas of Miami, overseeing all aspects of veterinary care during a clinic day including physical examination, diagnostics, treatment recommendations and delivery, prescribing of medications and discharge information
• Perform pre-surgery physical examinations on all surgical candidates
• Perform 25 – 40 high quality, high volume spay/neuter surgical procedures per spay/neuter clinic day
• Diagnose and treat post-surgical medical complications
• Perform and oversee all aspects of minor outpatient surgical procedures
• Provide a safe and compassionate environment for animals in our care, our staff, and for our clients by using low-stress handling techniques
• Triage and refer cases that do not fall within CM’s parameters of care as appropriate
• Perform humane euthanasia in accordance with ASPCA policy and protocols
• Provide support and medical services for clients of other ASPCA departments as needed, including evaluation and treatment of victims of hoarding situations

Client Service (30%)
• Communicate with clients in a respectful, nonjudgmental way; discuss physical examination and test results to allow pet owners to make informed decisions about their pet’s care
• Counsel owners about end of life and other sensitive medical concerns

The Medical Manager (MM)—Senior Veterinary Assistant (SVA) at the Community Veterinary Clinic (CVC) is a vital member of our veterinary medical team. The Medical Manager—SVA supports two program functions- spay/neuter surgery and primary pet care- for pet cats and dogs living with their families in ASPCA Focus areas and animals in the care of the rescue community. Throughout the day, Medical Manager—SVA is responsible for leading the Senior Veterinary Assistant team in client communication, assisting the veterinarian and/or veterinary technician, animal handling, preparing animals for surgery, entering medical records, and monitoring patients while they are under anesthesia. The MM—SVA and works closely with the MM—Certified Veterinary Technician (CVT) to coordinate the flow of work throughout the day and the cooperation between their teams and to support each other.

Additional Information

People Management (40%)
• Support a culture of respect, belonging and teamwork through regular 1:1s, recognition, supervision, developmental coaching, performance evaluation and feedback; seek counsel with People Partner as needed
• In collaboration with the Medical Manager—CVT, oversee and monitor the quality of all aspects of nursing care at the ASPCA’s CVC and adhere to CM’s standard operating procedures and guidelines
• Coach staff on efficient clinic flow, surgical prep, anesthesia monitoring, equipment maintenance and emergency procedures. Provide coaching and feedback to staff in real time
• Ensure that all team members have received training and mastered the skills to handle patients in a low stress manner, and that they implement these handling techniques consistently in all their interactions with animals
• Instill the guiding principle that everyone can – and should – actively support the animals’ behavioral and mental health in everything they do
• Coach technicians and assistants to communicate effectively with clients, to accurately relay information and to gather patient history and other information using open ended questions and a non-judgmental approach
• Be a consistent and visible presence in the clinic to answer questions, make timely adjustments, offer support, receive/give feedback, lend a hand, and foster understanding and commitment to ASPCA’s mission
• In coordination with the management team (Veterinary Staff, Client Operations and MM--CVT) and under the guidance of the Program Director, deliver cohesive messaging and address root causes of location problems and deliver corrective action plans as needed
• Partner with the ASPCA’s Talent Acquisition Team to recruit and hire staff SVAs, onboard and train new staff on CM medical processes and procedures
• Guide direct reports to write and fulfill annual goals which encourage teamwork and challenge them to grow professionally
• Write, schedule and conduct annual performance reviews
• Deliver disciplinary actions and follow up coaching as needed
• Track all safety related incidents and ensure that all incident and supervisor reports are completed promptly

Medical (50%)
• Oversee the flow of work on the clinic floor and ensure that all medical staff are efficiently using their time and skills to help the maximum number of patients daily
• Provide quality nursing care to patients at the CVC overseeing surgical prep, anesthesia monitoring, equipment maintenance and emergency procedures
• Provide feedback to MM—CVT on observation of technician duties including intubation, bladder expression, administering vaccines, fluids and injections and catheter placement
• Provide a safe and compassionate environment for animals in our care, our staff, and for our clients by using low-stress handling techniques
• Model effective and compassionate client communication
• Work side by side with staff veterinarians, technicians, and assistants to support HQHVSN for cats and dogs
• Work side by side with staff veterinarians, technicians, and assistants to support PPC and associated procedures for cats and dogs
• Participate in veterinary/medical training of CM staff. Coach staff to be peer trainers
• Work fill-in shifts as an SVA, planned in advance, due to regularly scheduled staff time off or unplanned shifts due to unscheduled staff absences
• Work partial shifts as an SVA to allow staff to take scheduled breaks when needed

Administrative (10%)
• Schedule CM SVAs for optimal coverage to keep the program running smoothly
• Meet regularly with the Program Director and onsite management team; provide open and honest and communication and feedback when things aren’t working as they should
• Support the ASPCA’s commitment to research and development to benefit animals across the country by participating in studies designed to improve access to care
• Attend workshops or meetings as needed

As a temporary driver for our Animal Relocation team, you will meet animal welfare professionals across the country and fill an important role in creating opportunities for animals. It’s hard work that takes a special person, but there is no better feeling than knowing you personally and directly improved outcomes for an animal.

ASPCA’s Shelter Outreach department is seeking Contingent Animal Relocation Drivers to support our Animal Relocation Initiative – a program aimed at increasing adoptions and decreasing euthanasia nationwide through safe and effective animal relocation and transport. Our Relocation team is responsible for successfully transporting approximately 35,000 animals each year – life-changing work that is made possible by our dedicated team of drivers.

Contingent Relocation Drivers, while not employees of the ASPCA, work closely with ASPCA staff members. This contingent position is responsible for driving ASPCA-owned vehicles to relocate animals travelling from sending shelter partners to receiving shelter partners. In addition to the crucial task of care and transport of both dogs and cats, this position is responsible for stocking the vehicle, monitoring the inventory in storage, maintaining logs, cleaning trucks and, on occasion, delivering the truck for maintenance. Drivers are required to frequently travel and stay overnight in hotels, fly to meet transport vehicles, be away from home at least two weeks per month, work long hours often in inclement weather and must be comfortable driving in snow and rain.

Please be aware of the following requirements. Drivers must:
• have animal handling skills and professional animal handling experience
• be located within an hour of a major airport
• be able to commit to a minimum of two weeks on transport (away from home) per month. The two weeks do not have to be consecutive (back-to-back), but drivers are typically on the road for 5-10 days at a time.
• Have five or more years of driving experience, provide a valid driver’s license upon hire and pass a motor vehicle history check demonstrating a safe driving history.

Animal Management and Transport (50%)

• Must be able to bend, kneel, and reach overhead to meet the physical requirements for this position
