Main Purpose of Job

This position is an educational learning opportunity for Maryland students within a program that has been provided by the Archives for over forty years. The position is a ten week internship for high school, college, and graduate school students to get hands-on experience and on-the-job training in the fields of archives, records management, conservation, preservation, public access, library studies, history, information management, and museum studies. Each student receives a staff mentor and works directly alongside professional archival staff members contributing to the core pillars of the Archives' mission: preservation and access. Students provide customer service by answering reference questions in person in the Archives' public research room and via mail and email; learning document preservation techniques in our conservation lab; maintaining the electronic archives; cataloging and handling documents, art, and artifacts; and providing contextual interpretation through research of our collections. These Maryland students receive a substantial educational benefit, and in return, the State receives 10 weeks of enthusiastic assistance with core duties of the Archives.

POSITION DUTIES

Interns are expected to work 35 hours per week, starting on Wednesday May 31, 2023-August 8, 2023. Job duties will vary by project, but will include assignments such as identifying, inventorying, and properly housing records and collection items; digitizing records; retrieving records for patrons; responding to reference inquiries; data entry; conducting biographical and thematic research on topics in Maryland history; cleaning and mending of documents and books; library shelf reading; assisting with the Archives' social media outreach and completing required program and reports and evaluations.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Good computer skills and experience working with databases and with the Google Suite, Microsoft Suite of Programs (Word, Excel, PowerPoint) and social media

Experience working with archival collections

Ability to lift up to 50 pounds

Summary Of Work

Under the supervision of the Local Government Records Archivist, the Local Government Intern will perform a repository wide collection level audit of Local Government Records to verify against our internal database the location, extent, condition, and accessibility status.

Many of the duties and tasks related to this project are repetitive, require an attention to detail and a degree of care as these are historical records.

On-site training will be provided.

Student Requirements

To be eligible for an internship, a student:
• Must be currently enrolled in an accredited college or university as a full-time student and working towards a degree in history, archives, library science, communication, public administration, or a closely related liberal arts or social science discipline; and
• Must be at least of sophomore standing by the beginning of the internship, and
• Must have a cumulative Grade Point Average (GPA) of at least 2.0 on a 4.0 scale.
