The Internet Archive is a non-profit organization working with 80+ world-class universities and libraries to create the world's largest digital open library. We partner with institutions (in this case, the Allen County... Library) to digitize and share unique collections of bound materials.

Gain experience in the following fields of endeavor: building an open source digital library, digital photography and digital scanning software, preservation and handling of special collections, presentation and production of digital books.

Responsibilities and Duties

We are looking for Digitization Technicians who are patient, conscientious, detail-oriented and who have the ability to work independently in a pleasant, low-stress work environment.
• Digitally scan images of pages in books and manuscripts using established processes and procedures.
• Ability to assess image quality and determine if a page has been skipped.
• Ability to troubleshoot and if that fails, to communicate with others about problems or solutions.
• Working knowledge of computers, e-mail, and spreadsheets - strong technical skills are preferred.
• Must be able to lift and move stacks of books (5-15 lbs. each) short distances, sit at a Scribe station, and use a foot pedal to raise and lower a glass platen.
• A high tolerance for repetitive tasks and expert attention to detail is necessary.
• Strong written and verbal communications skills.
• A love of books is a plus!

Physical/Special Requirements

Walking: Ability to move about on foot to accomplish tasks, to pick up materials to scan.

Lifting: Ability to raise and lower objects horizontally from position to position and lift up to 25 pounds safely.

Pushing/Pulling: Ability to use upper extremities to exert force in order to draw, haul or tug carts in a sustained push or pull motion.

Seeing: Required to have close visual acuity to determine the accuracy, neatness and thoroughness of scanning activity.

Sitting: Works at a computer 100% of the time. Must be able to sit at a scanning device for full shift length.

Scanning: Ability to use legs to push foot pedal, use hands and arms to raise and lower glass platen and to use eyes to see materials being scanned.

Cognitive Considerations
• Must have the ability to read, write in English and organize materials.
• Must be able to relate to other people in a professional manner.
• Ability to remain focused despite internal and external distractions.
• Must exhibit good safety awareness and judgment.

Must have availability Monday to Thursday to work in the downtown Allen County Public Library in Fort Wayne. This is a full time hourly position (8 hours/day) to be scheduled with the manager between 8 AM and 4:30 PM. The position may be limited to one year depending on work flow.

Job Summary

Dillard University a Methodist and Historically Black University, seeks an Archives & Special Collections Assistant.

The incumbent will work in-person full time (40hrs per week) and report to the Library Director. Archives & Special Collections Assistant.

Archival collections include a wide array of materials and formats including archival records, personal papers, photographic and other materials. The successful candidate will have knowledge of the use of Archive.org, archival theory, practice, standards and best practices.

Archives & Special Collections Assistant will participate in division department meetings and lead or support collaborations with other libraries and museums.

Processing Collections
• Performs preliminary and full processing of manuscript an archive collection; research historical and biographical information relevant to the collection.
• Upload historical photographs to Archive.org
• Indexing and creating descriptions for Dillard’s historical documents
• Interprets and enforces library policies for the security and administration of the collection
• Establish and maintain intellectual and physical control of the University Library’s collection in accordance with archives best practices.
• Utilizes Archive.org and historical collection to retrieve and query collection information
• Manage physical access and storage of archival material. Including inventory, re-housing and physical re-organization.

Mentoring and Instruction
• Supervise students and volunteers in support of Dillard University Archives & Special Collections Department objectives
• Provide public access to the collection by responding to requests from the public, staff and other institutions for information.
• Assist with education programming, the core curriculum and integrative pedagogy by filling request for research materials or facsimiles of collection documents

Service and Scholarship
• Assist working at the Circulation desk
• Serves on Library and University Committees
• Assist in applying for grants

Minimum Qualifications
• BS in Information Science with concentration in archival studies or some experience using libraries or a combination of education and work experience.
• Minimum of 1 year arranging and describing archival collections
• Demonstrated knowledge of archival procedures collection records management
• Knowledge of preventative conservation techniques and best practices
