Are you someone who loves working on products that make a meaningful difference? Are you excited to apply your skills across the full range of software development challenges from building and leading high performance teams to designing and implementing scalable event-driven cloud systems? If so, Onward is looking for you!
We have a unique opportunity for you to join us in our mission and to... shape the core infrastructure and services of our platform. We’re building the first financial platform for the modern family. We’re on a mission to solve the most difficult pain-point for the 50M+ co-parents with separated finances: Money. We’ll fundamentally change how co-parents plan, spend, and save for their children. We won’t be satisfied with our platform until we’ve enabled our users and their children to not just overcome their challenges, but to thrive.
We’re looking for someone with strong back-end or full stack skills and a passion for delivering best in class APIs, services, and infrastructure to take our financial services to the moon. You’ll be working hand-in-hand with the Head of Engineering and the leadership team on designing and implementing top quality engineering practices and patterns. You’ll have the autonomy and ownership to exercise your technical skill to execute Onward’s vision. We’re looking for someone who never settles for “good enough”, is obsessed with working smart and hard, and builds to make a difference.
We’ve got an incredible opportunity in front of us, a team firing on all cylinders, and a blossoming community of users who tell us they’ve needed the products we’re building yesterday. Join the ground floor of a well funded and rapidly growing start-up with top-tier VCs (Lerer Hippeau, Citi Ventures, and TTV Capital) and help create the foundation of our software stack, engineering team, and next-gen fintech platform!
Key responsibilities:
• Build and launch next-gen FinTech products (ex. payment integrations, shared credit cards, etc.) that our users love
• Work with product, design, and growth to make sure we’re building the right things for the right users
• Research, develop, and implement engineering best practices in CI/CD, testing, event driven systems and CQRS, instrumentation and monitoring, and infrastructure as code
• Own code from technical design through deployment and scaling
• Shape a team culture that you’re proud of and that makes you a better engineer
• Identify issues in our process and developer experience to improve our agility and allow you and the team to fully focus on fun problems
Success in this roles requires:
• Experience building backend services using a standard framework
• Experience in Typescript and/or a breadth of languages and language paradigms
• Successful experience building products at scale at past companies and thoughtful analysis of what worked and why
• Spectacular critical thinking and problem solving skills
• Excellent communication skills with a natural ability to flow between business and tech conversations and engage with a broad range of stakeholders
• Comfortable making decisions in highly uncertain context and see the impact of good decisions in a fast paced startup environment
• Empathy and compassion for the difficult challenges our users face and motivation to solve these challenges
Things to take it to the next level:
• Familiarity with Github actions, AWS CDK, Kafka, GraphQL frameworks, and relational databases
• Fearlessness with a willingness to try new ideas, concepts, and be wrong (but definitely learn from the experience)
• An unabashed desire to work with A players and an unwillingness to compromise
• 3+ years of experience working on backend services or fullstack
• Experience with FinTech products and integrations
This role is open to remote candidates in the United States.

What You’ll Do:
• Work directly with stakeholders across the organization to understand business priorities and build models to support critical decision making
