Designers work on a variety of projects designing both covers and interior text layouts. Day-to-day tasks include creating concept visuals, developing typography, liaising with freelancers and illustrators, and working alongside the wider team to create the best package for each book.

Responsibilities
• Work closely with our team to understand the vision and requirements for each book.
• Collaborate with illustrators and incorporate their assets into the book layouts.
• Overseeing budgets and freelancers and contracts, and negotiate fees and contracts with freelance designers, illustrators, and photographers
• Create designs that are modern, cool, and visually captivating for a young audience.
• Ensure that the layout, typography, and overall syntax of the books are coherent and appealing.
• Be adaptable to feedback and able to iterate designs in line with our brand’s vision and standards.
• Collaborate regularly with managing editorial, design, production, sales, and marketing as needed/requested.
• Deliver quality sample design files for catalog and sales materials and preflighting and preparing print-ready files for the printer on time and within budgetary guidelines.
• Ensure brand identity and design quality standards are maintained.

Qualifications
• Bachelor’s degree in art, graphic design, or related field or experience
• 5+ years prior experience in art direction and design for children’s books and/or long-form media
• Publishing industry experience preferred
• Proficiency in Adobe Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign, and Acrobat Pro required; Microsoft Office 365 preferred (Teams, Word, Excel, OneDrive, PowerPoint)
