Positions Include:

Headwaters Assessment and Monitoring Field Technician with American Rivers

Position Description: The Headwaters Assessment and Monitoring Field Technician will gain experience with watershed restoration and protection projects, including mountain meadow restoration and forest fuel management.

The member will primarily work on a meadow assessment effort in the Caldor fire footprint. The 2021 Caldor Fire burned approximately 255,000 acres in the South Fork American watershed, Cosumnes watershed, and Lake Tahoe Basin. It was the second wildfire in recent history to cross the Sierra crest. The member will work with American Rivers staff, a full-term SNAP member, and Forest Service staff to assess post-fire meadow condition and prioritize sites for restoration. Restoring meadows can mitigate the impacts of high severity fire by slowing runoff, capturing excess sediment and pollutants, and reducing water temperatures in fire affected watersheds. The member will be trained by and work with staff and our full-term SNAP member to use the American Rivers Meadow Condition Scorecardto assess approximately 40 meadows within the Caldor fire footprint. The member will digitize and field data and help create a list of priority meadow sites to advance to restoration.

The member will also have opportunity to work on other watershed restoration projects at American Rivers. Our restoration projects are at multiple stages of implementation, from initial assessment and prioritization to construction, and the AmeriCorps member will assist with and gain exposure to each phase of restoration. Additional assessment experience will likely include vegetation, groundwater, hydrology, fuel loading, and other biological assessments conducted in Sierra streams and high-elevation meadows.

The member can also help with outreach for the American Rivers’ California Regional office by working with staff in the CA and National office to outreach materials specific to river and watershed conservation in California.

Site-Specific Training Provided: The 2023 Headwaters Assessment and Monitoring Field Technician will work closely with the Headwaters Conservation team in the planning, design, implementation and evaluation of a range of projects focusing on rivers and watersheds. Member service projects in the Sierra will include:

Sierra Meadow Assessment and Prioritization for Restoration including:
• Caldor Fire meadows
• Sierra Meadow Restoration and Monitoring including:
• Monitoring and Restoration of Faith Valley Meadow
• Monitoring and Restoration of Log Meadow
• Monitoring of Grouse and Pickel Meadows
• Monitoring of Forni Meadow
• Monitoring and Restoration of Ackerson Meadow
• Monitoring and Restoration of Wilson Ranch and Calf Pasture
• Monitoring and Restoration of Confluence and McKenzie meadows
• Monitoring and Restoration of priority meadows Walker Watershed
• Forest fuels management projects including:
• Monitoring the Hoyt-Purdon fuel reduction along the South Yuba Rive
• Outreach for American Rivers California Regional Office:Tabling at local outreach events[MG1]

Members will be trained on field assessment and restoration methods by AR staff as they apply to specific projects. Assessment methods will likely include the Meadow Condition Scorecard, stream flow, groundwater, water quality, forest fuel loading, beaver dam surveys and vegetation surveys. Restoration methods may include willow staking, invasive removal, native plantings, and other meadow-specific restoration techniques. Members are also encouraged to identify trainings/conferences of interest – scientific, field skills, professional development, etc.

Things to Note: American Rivers is a national nonprofit organization and you would be working out of the California office, in Nevada City. This position should expect to work closely with American Rivers current, full-term SNAP member in the field and office. Fieldwork is concentrated in the summer in high alpine meadows and river headwaters. This position will require frequent multi-day camp trips in remote locations in the Sierra Nevada. At American Rivers, your Sierra work will always be placed in the larger context of what’s happening in river conservation nationwide. We are serious about the professional development of our SNAP members, and all of our SNAP alumni have gone on to either government or nonprofit environmental work or graduate school. Office culture is fun and social (picnics, river trips) and also professional. Nevada City is a small, vibrant foothill town with an active local foods movement, great access to whitewater, biking, hiking, etc. and two other SNAP host sites.

Desired Qualifications:
• Study or interest in river science
• Bachelor’s degree in Environmental Sciences, Natural Resources/Planning, Geomorphology, or related field OR one year’s experience in natural resource restoration
• Experience in field studies and stream sampling
• Strong oral and written communication skills
• Interest in/ability to participate in multi-day trips in the field, including camping

JOB SUMMARY

The Vice President of Institutional Advancement provides strategic guidance and leadership for American Rivers’ foundation and corporate fundraising and public sector grants program, all of which accounts for a significant portion of the organization’s $20+ million in annual revenue. This externally facing role requires demonstrated expertise in foundation and public sector grant and contract proposal development, coupled with exceptional collaboration, communication, grant writing, and project management skills. A demonstrated commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion and effectiveness in an impact-oriented and highly collaborative environment are central to the position. The ideal candidate will be a team player and innovative thinker who will serve as a thought-partner for the Senior Vice President for Advancement, an inspiring leader for the Institutional Advancement team, a productive member of the cross-divisional Advancement Leadership team, as well as a close collaborator with the Conservation program team.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
• Lead a Foundations and Grants team who will strategically build the volume of prospective donors/funders/government grants for American Rivers’ priorities in support of key campaigns and fundraising initiatives. Promote innovation, collaboration, and enhanced outcomes and national recognition of American Rivers.
• Provide critical leadership, strategy, management, and coordination of American Rivers’ fundraising program from foundations and corporate philanthropy, and public sector grants. This includes overseeing strategic advancement efforts as well as operational planning, budgeting, and reporting for these areas.
• Carry a personal portfolio of donors and prospects in the 6-figure or more range. Partner closely with team members on strategic relationship management for current and prospective donors, interfacing with AR programs and departments to ensure smooth and timely information flow, and collaborating closely with the Finance team.
• Employ a data driven approach, analyzing and interpreting data, to set the institutional advancement strategic direction.
• Advise the SVP of Advancement on matters related to institutional advancement, including appropriate policy recommendations and strategic planning actions for growth and sustainability.
• Project fundraising goals, implement fundraising plans and strategies, measure and report on progress, and adjust work plans as needed to meet ambitious goals.
• Work collaboratively with other development staff to utilize board members, donors, regional advisory board members and others to maximize opportunities for foundation and corporate fundraising.
• Carry out special projects that add value for the department or the organization.
• Participate in advancing AR’s DEJ goals in which people from all backgrounds and experiences feel connected, included, and empowered to address the environmental and organizational challenges in alignment with AR’s values.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
• Bachelor’s degree required, advanced degree preferred; minimum of twelve years of development experience in one or more of the following areas: institutional giving, major gifts, government fundraising, or operational/business planning.
• Strong leadership, interpersonal, analytic and people/project management skills.
• Ability to oversee and execute a complex set of projects with time-sensitive deliverables.

The focus of the position will be engagement on the upcoming reissuance of Nationwide Permits and implementation of the new Waters of the US rule.
