About the Position

The Chief Credit Officer (CCO) will co-lead the small business lending program of CRF, its subsidiaries, and affiliates, with the Chief Lending Officer. She/He/They is specifically responsible for establishing, maintaining, and managing the credit culture at CRF. As a member of the CRF leadership team, this individual will partner with other CRF executives to guide the organization according to its mission, “to improve lives and strengthen communities through innovative financial solutions.”

As CRF enters the next phase of organizational growth, the CCO will provide input and vision into all aspects of the organization’s strategy, to expand and enhance its lending activities. The position will be a strategic partner to the CEO, President, Chief Financial Officer, Chief Lending Officer, and the senior leadership team as they consider opportunities to increase the impact its lending activities can have on small businesses.

The CCO is specifically responsible for establishing, maintaining, and managing the credit risk management function, including credit policies and procedures, approval process, risk tolerance and oversight of collections and problem loan resolution. Additionally, the CCO monitors the performance of CRF’s business loan portfolio.

The CCO ensures that loans originated and/or acquired follow adopted policies and regulations; evaluates the effectiveness of the credit policies and practices; and recommends changes to policies and practices to the governing bodies of CRF and its affiliates. The CCO maintains support for the organization’s credit culture across all products and actions. The CCO contributes ideas and suggestions in an effort to continually improve internal processes. The CCO is an essential part of meeting CRF’s fiduciary responsibilities and contributing to the overall growth and stability of CRF.

The CCO role may require some travel to accommodate client site visits, conferences, headquarters in Minneapolis, MN, etc. Occasional evening and weekend hours may also be expected.

Salary Range: $185k to $225k Annually (exempt)

Key Responsibilities and Accountabilities (include, but not limited to)
• Establish the organization’s credit culture, including the values, beliefs, and behaviors of the lending activity;
• Manage overall lending portfolio risk;
• Ensure processes and procedures adhere to compliance and regulatory requirements and enable a controlled environment;
• Build and lead teams of talented staff who are highly engaged, energized and focused on excellence in achieving CRF’s mission;
• Provide effective training, mentoring, and coaching throughout and conduct succession planning exercises to provide for employee career progression and operational continuity.

Scope of Accountabilities
• Credit policy and implementation;
• Underwriting and ability to lead a team of underwriters and asset managers;
• Co-leadership related to credit culture with the Chief Lending Officer;
• Portfolio risk management;
• Credit reporting and analytics;
• Internal and external communication of lending performance

About You

Professional Experience
• Deep understanding and demonstration of managing credit risk associated with lending to small businesses with a minimum of ten years of lending experience (or combination of education, experience, and understanding);
• Expertise in developing flexible underwriting and operational processes that conform to the organization’s credit culture and innovation;
• Working knowledge of and ability to apply portfolio management to CRF’s small business loans, including default management, foreclosure and bankruptcy processes to collections and recovery efforts;
• Knowledge of legal processes governing commercial loans and commercial real estate is preferred;
• Knowledge of insurance coverages, UCC, loan servicing procedures, compliance/regulation, and general risk management preferred;
• Experience creating and analyzing new financial products;
• Experience leading diverse credit teams;
• Experience working with or knowledge of community development finance industry is helpful;
• Excellent oral and written communication skills;
• Proven ability to effectively work with both technical and non-technical groups;
• Ability to thrive and succeed in a rapidly growing and changing environment.
• Receptive to feedback; works towards self-improvement and team improvement; leads with empathy; sense of humor

Educational Requirements

Bachelor’s degree in economics, finance, accounting, business or a related field; MBA or advanced degree in a relevant field preferred.

Responsibilities

Summary Duties: Responsibilities will vary by the business unit this role supports.

50% Fund Admin support to include reviewing loan financial information , creating internal documents and reports on the loan intake process, and determining best practices for the department. You may also answer customer questions and oversee the processing of loan documents.
• Manage an active loan purchase pipeline utilizing existing technology platforms and by following up with originators and sub-servicers.
• Develop strong knowledge base of small business financial products.
• Engage in proactive knowledge-sharing and training opportunities related to the existing and new programs.
• Contribute to the development and improvements of templates and standard operating procedures.

50% Risk & Business Controls to primarily consist of assisting in the gathering/compiling, vetting, and entering of third-party vendor contracts and contact information in CRF’s third-party vendor management system.
• Assist with planning and developing the vendor management policy, program and procedures.
• Help establish vendor selection and contract negotiation processes .
• Enter the third-party vendor contracts into the vendor management system.
• Assist in setting of procedures to monitor vendor risk even after the vendor contract is executed.
• Maintain the database of pertinent risk information pertaining to third parties and communicate this data to the Director of Risk & Business Controls.

Other potential duties and responsibilities could include data entry into CRF’s Process Risk Control (PRC) tool.

Preferred Qualifications
