Within NGS, the Science & Innovation team is a department that oversees the Society’s grantmaking efforts in science, conservation and technology, develops and manages major mission programs, and establishes programmatic partnerships with like-minded non-governmental organizations (NGOs).

Over the last twelve years, Pristine Seas, National Geographic’s flagship ocean conservation program has helped to inspire the protection of 26 of the last wild places in the ocean, encompassing more than 6 million square kilometers of ocean. We are seeking a Director, Expeditions, Pristine Seas to support and scale our approach over the next decade to inspire the protection of up to 40 new places. Additionally, we aim to cultivate and expand a network of best-in-class partners to build a community of support for protected areas.

The Director, Expeditions will be supported by the Manager, Expeditions in planning, producing, and managing marine expeditions for Pristine Seas. This position serves as liaison between all departments and the Expeditions team to ensure that the goals and deliverables of the event or expedition project are met and executed.

Your Impact

Responsibilities Include

Marine Expedition Design and Preparation (25%)
• Oversee all planning, designing, preparing, and execution for up to four scouts per year and up to four expeditions per year. Travel required.
• Along with the Manager, Expeditions, act as the primary communicator, department lead, and supervisor of all contractor and staff-related expedition activities
• Along with the Manager, Expeditions, act as the primary liaison between Base Camp and field, implementing the organization’s procedures and guidelines
• Participate in Pristine Seas scouting trips to build partner relationships, assess expedition risk, and make arrangements for team members
• Report back to Base Camp on the status of relationships with our suppliers and partners

Marine Expedition Production & Logistics (25%)
• Along with the Field Specialists, supervise the Pristine Seas warehouse, gear, and equipment including Zodiacs, Hyperbaric Chamber, Compressor, etc.
• Along with the Field Specialists, supervise and act as point of contact for shipping and logistics partner (GAC)
• Along with the Field Specialists, supervise and act as point of contact for field communication partner (Resudox)
• Along with the Manager, Expeditions and the Expedition Leader, oversee the creation of the expedition schedule, team list/crew rotations, and logistics
• Along with the Manager, Expeditions, collaborate with the Expedition Leader, Field Specialists, and NGS Nurse to ensure safe operations and risk management

Marine Expedition Field Management and Leadership (50%)
• Act as Expedition Leader and/or Dive Safety Officer on specific expeditions when appropriate
• Lead and organize daily on-board safety trainings, cultural trainings, meetings, briefings, and drills
• Consistently communicate and maintain Pristine Seas' philosophy, history, and values with all staff, contractors, and crew on-board
• Supervise Field Specialists, medical support, and additional contract staff if required
• Assist with many aspects of Zodiac operations for nearshore and deepsea filming and scientific data collection
• Participates in scientific data collection activities when necessary

What You’ll Bring

Educational Background

Bachelor’s degree, though Master’s degree preferred

Minimum Years And Type Of Experience

10+ years of professional work experience in a related industry including producing and managing expeditions or fieldwork. Experience in the non-profit and/or environmental sector is preferred but not required.

Necessary Knowledge And Skills
• High understanding of marine conservation issues, project scope, and programmatic needs
• Excellent organizational skills with high attention to detail
• Highly developed oral and written communication skills with competency in word processing and spreadsheet (Google Drive, Excel, Word, PowerPoint and Keynote).

The Specialist, Business Operations will support the Manager, Business Operations and the Senior Director, Business Operations in managing travel logistics, organizing programmatic activities, supporting internal communications, and providing administration support for the Pristine Seas project.

Your Impact

Responsibilities Include

Travel Logistics and Scheduling (40%)
• Assist the Senior Director, Business Operations and Manager, Business Operations by supporting up to four scouts per year and up to four expeditions per year. Some travel may be required.
• Collect team travel and health documents (passports, dive releases, insurance certificates, etc) necessary for travel, diving, and boating activities
• Generate bookings and reservations (visas, flights, hotels, etc) for team travel and VIP travel as well as arrange ground logistics as needed with assistance from Payment Coordinator, Business Operations
• Help procure specialized gear as required by both the Expedition department and the Research department

Programmatic Activities and Communications (40%)
• Assist the Ocean Policy team in producing community events and also support the programmatic activities of the Research, Education, and Communications departments
• Manage the production of up to four scientific reports per year
• Manage the production of additional professional documents including the Pristine Seas annual Board report, donor reports, various scientific 2-pagers, etc
• Maintain high morale for program members through social activities and motivational messaging, and ensure internal communications/onboarding messages are consistent to all team members.

Administrative Support (20%)
• Support the Executive Director and Senior Director, Business Operations in scheduling and administration of Pristine Seas
• Arrange key meetings including coordination with outside partners, including:
• Support communications with donors, partners, and project visitors
• Support meeting planning, postal/courier and reproduction tasks, team phone support, IT/IS request support, security, etc.
• Arrange elements e.g. food, travel, meeting rooms, AV, etc.
• Manage purchasing of office supplies as needed
• Manage and track Pristine Seas HQ inventory (books, premiums, gifts, etc) and manage shipping of this inventory in collaboration with the National Geographic shipping department

Hybrid - At the Society, we believe in the advantages of coming together to build community, mentor and learn from colleagues, and connect more deeply with our mission. As a result, the majority of our staff are Hybrid. Our Hybrid category requires that staff work at Base Camp two days each week: every Wednesday plus either Tuesday or Thursday. Because we recognize that we can effectively work remotely, this designation has been updated to provide more flexibility, both in the days staff choose to come into the office and how often they are expected to be at Base Camp.
